The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is pleased to offer a one-year
advanced postgraduate fellowship in the structural work on canvas paintings
beginning in September 2019. The fellowship is made possible through the
generous support of the Getty Foundation through its Conserving Canvas
<http://www.getty.edu/foundation/initiatives/current/conservingcanvas/index.html>
initiative.

Conserving Canvas was created to bridge the growing gap in training in
structural work on canvas that has developed as the conservation field has
moved away from preventive lining. The Fine Arts Museums are fortunate to
be a contributor to the Initiative and its educational goals through the
conservation of *Vertumnus and Pomona* (1757) by François Boucher and his
studio. The Getty Conserving Canvas Fellow will play an integral role in
the treatment of this 10 foot tall painting, which has a failing lining and
other structural issues. The Fellow will be deeply involved in two
workshops that will be hosted by the department focused on the painting’s
de- and re-lining, and they will have opportunities for travel and research
in support of the educational goals of the fellowship. The successful
candidate will additionally work on other smaller-scale projects that have
canvas issues and survey the Fine Arts Museums' paintings collection with
an eye toward its structural needs. Presentation and/or publication of the
project is expected.

The Fine Arts Museums are comprised of the de Young Museum, which exhibits
the American, Modern and Contemporary, and Africa, Oceania, and the
Americas collections, and the Legion of Honor, which houses the European
and Graphic Arts collections. The Paintings Conservation department is
located in a spacious and well-equipped studio at the de Young. In
addition to the three paintings conservators and one frames conservator in
the department, the Fellow will regularly interact with the Museums’
Objects, Paper, and Textiles conservation departments, as well as curators,
registrars, technicians, and other staff.

The fellowship award is $50,000 with a full benefits package. Additional
funds are available for travel and research. Candidates must be graduates
of a conservation training program, have a strong interest in structural
treatment, and have proven treatment skills.

To apply, please submit a letter of interest, a CV, two letters of
recommendation, one treatment report with images, and one additional
writing sample through the online web platform
https://famsf.snaphire.com/jobdetails?ajid=hCjO7.

The application closes February 1, 2019.
