Penn Museum is looking for several Project Conservators to work on monumental Egyptian stone sculpture and architecture in preparation for the reopening of our Ancient Egypt and Nubia Galleries, scheduled to open June 2022. The Project Conservator will work as part of a team responsible for carrying out conservation work on monumental Egyptian stone sculpture and architectural elements, under the supervision of the Lead Exhibition Conservator. This will include work on elements from the Palace Complex of the Pharaoh Merenptah (19th Dynasty) and an Old Kingdom painted limestone mortuary chapel, as well as other major sculptural elements from the Museum's stellar Egyptian and Nubian Collections. The very ambitious exhibition plans include re-erecting major elements from the Palace Complex of Merenptah for the first time since they left Egypt in 1919. The primary duties include carrying out necessary treatments; keeping written, photographic, and electronic records of work; working with engineers and mount-makers to design and implement support armatures; and keeping current with developments in the field through readings, conferences, online discussions, and personal contacts. This is a one-year, term funded position with renewal subject to available funding and Museum needs. Applicants must have current eligibility to work in the US; those without an existing eligibility cannot be considered due to the time-sensitive nature of this project. The candidate must be a graduate of a recognized Masters-level conservation training program with at least two years of professional experience after graduation, preferably in a similar institution. Experience in working on comparable monumental pieces and familiarity with working on scaffolding or elevated surfaces are highly desirable. Training on all specialized equipment, including but not limited to scaffolding, forklifts, laser cleaning units, and power tools will be provided. Must be able to work in the offsite CLA, located near Trenton, New Jersey. This site is approximately 50 minutes from Philadelphia and 90 minutes from NYC area and is not accessible by public transit. We are a large and dynamic department with excellent working rapport and we are seeking like minds to help us succeed on this very challenging project. Sound work habits, personal initiative, organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to undertake moderate to heavy lifting are essential. Candidate will uphold collegial and collaborative working relationships with conservation staff and other departments. Flexibility, patience, and good humor will be valuable assets in these positions. Open to all, the Penn Museum is home to remarkable objects and powerful stories that emerge from its extraordinary expeditions across the world. Discover the cultures of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the Mediterranean, from the very first cities of the Middle East to the kings of ancient Egypt; from prehistoric Mexico to the lives of Native American communities today.
