GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: This role provides technical and administrative support under the general direction of the Environmental Research Scientist in the Preventive Conservation Science Laboratory (PCSL) for the completion of an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership grant. The grant funds the development of new test methods and the testing of commercially available materials used in the display, transport, and storage of art as well as construction materials. This role will focus on the use of both the Oddy test and a paper-based version of the Oddy test to evaluate materials with the purpose of assessing materials being used near organic collections. The role includes the selection, organization, testing, of these materials as well as the dissemination of test results. Duties will include the maintenance of databases, collection of technical data from primary sources, writing of reports and standard operating procedures, and communication of test results. The role also includes maintaining related equipment and supplies. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: - Assist with testing of display and housing materials using ion chromatography and Oddy testing techniques for compatibility with artwork. - Assist with the selection and sourcing of display and housing materials utilizing existing databases, end-user interviews, and commercial suppliers. - Utilize database and web-enabled applications to document and disseminate materials testing results. - Assist with maintenance of ion chromatography equipment, cleaning and maintenance of glassware and other test apparatus. - Participate in planning of experiments and the coordination and distribution of sample materials for related testing in the PCSL. - Writes progress and summary reports, standard operating procedures, and annotated bibliographies on related topics and activities. - Other duties as assigned.
