Dear Members, We are still accepting applications for our summer 2026 field
school in Italy, hosted by Amelia International Conservation Studies (AICS).

Our deadline for applications has been extended to April 15, 2026. With over
two decades of expertise and a global alumni network spanning over 300
institutions, ARCIFS is dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. As
we look ahead to this summer, we are particularly excited to highlight our
immersive course in Analyzing, Documenting, and Restoring Archaeological
Ceramics <https://www.arcifs.org/archaeological-ceramics-conservation>.
<https://www.arcifs.org/archaeological-ceramics-conservation> Looking back at
the evolution of this program, we are truly honored by the trust and open doors
our students and faculty have encountered. It is a rare privilege to step
inside the restricted, history-steeped Vatican Laboratories for Archaeological
Ceramics.
Furthermore, thanks to our ongoing partnerships, including with the Colosseum
Archaeological Park, our students have worked directly with fascinating
amphorae from recent excavations at the Roman Forum, alongside beautiful
14th-to-16th-century maiolicas provided by our collaborating specialists.
Through field trips to the Deruta Museum and hands-on guidance from our lead
technical directors and guest experts, this program transforms technical
training into an unforgettable professional experience. Curious about the
world-class experts and institutional leaders who make this access possible?

to meet our faculty and partners and see the incredible work they do. We
would be thrilled to offer your students this same level of unparalleled
access. Program Details & Curriculum: All lessons are taught in English and
are open to undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines (art
history, archaeology, anthropology, chemistry, museum studies, classics, and
related fields to apply, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of historic
preservation). Session Two (July 13 - August 7, 2026) Featuring Ceramics

International Field School, based in Amelia, Italy. We have established
cooperation agreements with the Municipality of Amelia to study and conserve
artworks and archaeological objects held in their museums, as well as a
collaboration with the Historic Archives of the Comune di Amelia for AICS
participants to study and conserve archival documents. Since June 2024, we
have enjoyed
a significant cooperation with the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, and more
recently, we established a new academic agreement with the prestigious and
internationally renowned Accademia di Brera in Milan, in April 2025. These
agreements further expand our reach and commitment to excellence in
conservation education. If you know any students, scholars, or others

 Message:

The Washington Conservation Guild (WCG)
<https://washingtonconservationguild.org/> is looking for new Board Members to
help share responsibilities in the running of the organization. Would you, or
someone you know, like to volunteer with us? We have events that could use
support and active participation. All roles are thoroughly detailed in the WCG
handbook, which provides step-by-step guidelines. Below is a selection of open
positions.

Emerging Professionals serving on the WCG Board receive free membership!

Interested? Email [email protected]
<[email protected]>

Meeting Director:

As a key member of the committee responsible for organizing and running the
monthly member meetings, this individual collaborates closely with a team to
ensure each meeting is engaging, informative, and well-executed. Tasks include
coordinating with invited speakers to confirm details and crafting compelling
meeting announcements to generate interest and attendance. During the meeting,
they may take on the role of chairing the lecture or capturing the meeting
through photography or video, then editing the content for use on social media
platforms.

Virtual Point of Contact (PoC) for Speakers:

The PoC will communicate with speakers in advance of the event to gather key
details about their presentation to craft engaging meeting announcements that
are sent to members. For virtual events, the PoC will organize and lead a
practice Zoom session and then chair the live session. For in-person meetings,
a PoC who is not in the DC area can hand off chairing responsibilities to
another Meeting Director.

In-person Point of Contact (PoC) for Speakers:

In addition to the roles above, the in-person Meeting Director assists with the
reception by welcoming attendees, providing information, and fostering a
friendly, inclusive atmosphere for all participants before chairing the lecture
portion of the meeting. Meeting Directors should be available for in-person
meetings located in the DC area.

Subject: IAP Virtual seminar: Preservation of Rock Art
 Message:

Date: Thursday, 23 April 2026
Time: 3pm GMT
Tutor: Andrew Thorn
Price: £25.00
Platform: Zoom

There will be a 55 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of discussion.

Please register through Humanitix
<https://events.humanitix.com/preservation-of-rock-art>

This seminar will outline the principles that guide the role of the conservator
who is confronted with paintings and engravings on natural rock surfaces. These
are especially common to hunter gatherer societies at any time in history, from
ancient engravings dating to 40,000 years ago to recent times.

Topics covered include examples of environmental studies, condition surveys and
treatment implementations and the relationship with custodial groups. Through
working with such groups the conservator learns respect for the land, the
culture and the people and the custodial groups can better understand how
modern technology can be used by them, as they choose, to better protect their
spiritual heritage.

For more information and to register please visit our website
<https://academicprojects.co.uk/courses/preservation-of-rock-art/>

Andrew Thorn is a conservator working on mural paintings and stone objects with
a special interest in the preservation of indigenous cultural heritage. Andrew
has spent the past thirty years developing preservation systems, both passive
and interventive, for the protection of rock paintings and engravings. His
approach applies a combination of environmental solutions, non-contact analysis
and materials development, all of which can be equally applied to all facets of
heritage preservation. An area of special interest is the development of simple
field techniques for analysis and documentation, for which he has extensive
publications, including eight presentations to IIC Congresses and numerous
contributions to several working groups of ICOM-CC, recognizing that
dissemination is a vital part of the development process.
