Subject: 11th Annual Art & Theater Safety Course (August 10-14, 2026) ONLINE
Message: I'm delighted to be coordinating Monona Rossol's health and safety in
the arts course again this summer. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions about the content or signing up. An updated digital version of
Monona's The Artist's Complete Health and Safety Guide is included with the
course.

Registration is open for the 11th Annual Art and Theater Safety Course (August
10-14, 2026) sponsored jointly by Arts, Crafts & Theater Safety, Inc. (ACTS)
and the Art Conservation Department of the University of Delaware.

Designed and led by industrial hygienist Monona Rossol, this ONLINE program
focuses on health and safety issues unique to the professionals, teachers, and
students working in the creative arts, including:

• Materials, processes, and equipment
• Laws, regulations, codes, and standards
• Requirements for professional studios
• Requirements for classrooms for all student populations (children,
college-age, seniors, and art therapy patients)
• Ventilation for hazardous materials and infection control

Traditionally, the students include a range of safety professionals, industrial
hygienists, professional artists, conservators, and theatrical and film
professionals. The exchange of ideas between these groups is a vital component
of the course, which is structured to allow for collaboration. A balance
between art and entertainment issues is maintained. Students may be observing
toxic particle generation during movie gunfights in the morning and considering
potential chemical hazards of historic and modern paint pigments in the
afternoon.

The format of the course is 4 days of in-depth instruction and lecture by
Rossol and a final day of brief presentations by participants on a topic of
their choice. Completion of a take-home exam at the end of the week is required
to receive a certificate of achievement.

The course was developed by Rossol, who taught the first courses on art safety
in 1980 at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Over the years, she continued
to expand and perfect the curriculum, keeping it current and relevant. The
course focuses on materials, processes, and equipment used in the arts today
and the laws, regulations, codes, and standards that apply to those uses. It
will cover safety and health issues for professionals and teachers working in
the creative arts, including requirements for professional studios and
classrooms for all student populations (children, college-age, seniors, and art
therapy patients).

The text for the course is the 4th Edition of the Artist's Complete Health and
Safety Guide, which is not available from any other source. This "4th Edition"
is updated every year to be certain the air quality standards, regulations, and
toxicity data are current. A PDF file of the 34 chapters and appendix is
provided to students along with a number of other data sheets and publications.

Students who pass the final exam will receive a letter from Rossol certifying
their training in certain OSHA regulations and fitness to consult in this area.
These letters have qualified many individuals for jobs in arts practice,
education, or in theatrical and entertainment unions and employers. Rossol is
dedicated and passionate about art safety, and she remains a supportive
resource to her students throughout their careers.

Tuition is $700 by check or money order payable in advance to the nonprofit
corporation, Arts, Crafts & Theater Safety (ACTS), and sent c/o Monona Rossol
at 181 Thompson St., #23, New York NY 10012. Contact Monona at [email protected]
<[email protected]> if you have questions or for a subject outline.

The course hours are tentatively 11 am to 6 pm EST (breaks for lunch, etc.) but
open to class vote.

Hello,
In Europe we are no longer able to source suitable Tinuvin 292: suppliers are
issuing Certificates of Analysis that have already expired. Has anyone
encountered the same problem? Where are you purchasing Tinuvin 292?
Thank you,

Subject: Help ECP Strengthen Building Performance Data for the Museum Sector
 Message:
Posted on behalf of our parters at Environment & Culture Partners

Museums and similar cultural institutions operate buildings that differ
significantly from typical commercial facilities, yet national benchmarking
tools have limited data that reflects these conditions. To address this gap,
Environment & Culture Partners (ECP) and New Buildings Institute (NBI) are
coordinating a national data‑collection effort to support future building
performance analysis for the museum sector.

Institutions are being asked to share building and operational information
through a standardized survey. The results will be submitted to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for potential analysis and development
of a 1-100 ENERGY STAR® Score for museums and other cultural institutions.

A dataset from at least 300 cultural institutions of varying types, sizes, and
geographic regions nationwide is necessary to produce a representative analysis
for the sector.

If the score is developed, it would offer cultural institutions a consistent
and credible way to evaluate building performance, compare similar facilities,
identify opportunities to lower harmful greenhouse gas emissions and operating
costs, and potentially pursue ENERGY STAR® certification. Learn more about the
National Museum and Cultural Institution Energy Survey.

Subject: Olfactory devices and preventive conservation
 Message: Dear all,

After a first post on the AAM Open Forum, I follow up here with the same post.

As part of a Master's thesis in Preventive Conservation in France, I am
currently conducting a study on the potential impact of olfactory diffusion
devices on artworks and collections in cultural institutions.
The aim of this questionnaire is to gather feedback from institutions that have
already experimented with this type of mediation in exhibitions (permanent,
temporary, or event-based), in order to better document existing practices and
any conservation-related concerns.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 15 minutes to complete.
Any contribution, even partial, would be extremely valuable for this research,
which remains a relatively underexplored topic.

Thank you very much in advance for your time !
