Except when they do. There are lots of dances where you interact with that
corner/diagonal/same role person. I can see the point of not going into great detail on
that, but I wouldn't dismiss them as being meaningless and to be ignored. I usually say
something like, "you have your partner and your neighbor and then there is 3rd
person diagonally across from you who you may interact with sometimes." I usually
don't go into any more detail about who that person is, but I want the new dancers to be
aware there is someone there.

Same-role neighbor; but usually I don't bother identifying that person as I
orient folks in a lesson. I just talk about the folks you have hands with.

I've used several designations, depending on the context:

    Same-role neighbor
    Diagonal neighbor
    Diagonal

Or I might have fun pointing out that your neighbor's partner is also your
partner's neighbor, but you can call 'em Jay.

        Hi All,

What do _you_ call your neighbor's partner in a 4-some when teaching a
lesson?

e.g.: "This is your partner, that is your neighbor, and that is
_______."
