As suggested by JP, we really need to split the deletions out and drive via a
queue (either db entries or a flat file queue).
So the frontend (smanager panel) adds items for deletion to the queue, some
monitoring process will take items off the queue and process them.
Will park this for a while, but really needs to be in place for when we use
smanager more.
