i didn't enable gdm when i installed mandrake. i enabled it using
linuxconf and setting network+graphics and run-level 3. gdm is
installed. when i boot X starts but the screen remains blank except for
the default X background. i don't know what the significance of this but
this is what's in /var/gdm/:0.log (attached)
