I experienced the same problems as Oliver when trying to install the
beta from local CD-ROM on an Ultra2.  When I tried to install from a
serial console, the kernel died with "can't open tty1".  When I tried
from a real console with a GX PLUS video card, I selected local
CD-ROM install and it said it couldn't mount anything on /dev/scd0.
I hit the "back" button and it printed a new message like "detecting
CD-ROM drive..." and hung. At that point I gave up.

The md5sum of my ISO image is correct.
