It seemed to me that the detected video memory was the smaller of the
actual vidmem size and the BIOS's AGP aperture size.

I seem to have subsequently disproved that, but it may be worth a
test run for you?

For Voodoo3 3000 video cards, a too large AGP aperture size will
certainly defeat brooktree chipset TV cards.
