Mandrake has not required you to do anything at all to have working CD-Writing in a long time. Back in 7.2 you had to be a member of the cdwriter group, but since 8.1/8.2/9.0? this was no longer necessary. I see now with an update to kdebase, that I now have a CD-ROM icon (instead of the removable media icon), but there is a problem with the icon. So your issue may be unrelated to k3b. I am running kdebase-3.1-81mdk at present.
