Solution to this problem from Michael O <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (read in a
posting in alt.os.linux.mandrake).

Log in as root and start the KDE Control Centre > LookNFeel > Behavior. 

Under "Misc Options" enable "Enable icons on desktop". Also have a look at "Clic
on Desktop" to enable mouse actions.

When logging in the the KDE desktop loads ( the kde status indicator goes
through all it's icons ) but the watch icon never goes away and the desktop
icons are not displayed on the disk.

Note the tune that kde plays on startup does not occur.  This had been working
with B3
