description:
The following lines were recorded by the konsole terminal on my i686 PC
running Mandrake Linux 9.0rc3:

# dmesg -c &>/dev/null
# tcpdump -i eth0 host 1.1.1.1 &
[1] 2172
tcpdump: listening on eth0
# dmesg
eth0: Promiscuous mode enabled.
device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
# ifconfig eth0 | grep UP
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

First, I cleared the kernel messages by calling "dmesg -c", and then I
enabled the promiscuous mode of eth0 by calling "tcpdump" and verified
that bye calling "dmesg" again. However, the status was not reported by
"ifconfig", which should have reported something like
UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

It seems the PROMISC status was not detected bye ifconfig :-(
