Hi,
I have several objections to the 2.4.21-0.13mdk kernel-secure packaged with
Mandrake 9.1. The main one is that, even though the modules are supposed to be
packaged in the kernel according to the lm_sensors package documentation, the
kernel does not allow the lm_sensors service to produce the output which the
lm_sensors package enables. I have tried every possible combination both taking
into consideration that the sensor modules *are* built into the kernel and
suposing that they are *not* built into the kernel, but running the
sensor-detect command from the present (in 9.1) and previous (9.0) Mandrake
contained lm_sensors packages in every possible variation, taking several days,
I had to come to the conclusion that it is impossible with this kernel.
My only recourse was to revert to the kernel 2.4.19-32-secure, where the
lm_sensors package runs smoothly (both the one packaged with MD 9.0 and 9.1). I
cannot live without temperature readings, because my machine runs 24/7 and must
be put on hold sometimes in summertime due to overheating.
(My mainboard is a Soto SY-6BB on other boards YMMV).
Please note I am running Linux only for a few months and not upto trying cooker
versions yet or compiling my own kernel. In a few months time I hope to be far
enough with my general Linux know-how to compile my own.
My other (minor) grievances against the new kernel are 1/ that I as user cannot
see the full result of the ´ps´ command (e.g. ´ps -e´ or ´ps -au´) only as root,
2/ same for the ´netstat -ie´ command, 3/ with the kernel 2.4.19-16, -32 and the
original one in the 9.0 package (-12?) the PIDs of processes are sorted nicely
numerically in order of startup. With this kernel they are randomly assigned and
the ´ps -e´ output looks a shambles, if I may say so.
