Sorry, acpi was not enable because of another bug (can't remember the) by which
checking acpi in the cnfiguration leaves acpi=off. 
Tested with 2.4.22-2mdk and the bug is still present.

When I boot a system with acpi=on, the system hangs during the boot sequence on
"checking for new hardware". The computer is a Toshiba Satellite 5200-711.
If I skip Harddrake during the boot sequence, the system hangs after i log in.
