The kernel from kernel.org doesn't have this problem. Also, I've
been using Gentoo ever since this problem came up without any
issues, and others have reported most other distros working as well.
It seems to be a problem with something that Mandrake has customized
in the kernel.

Unfortunately, most first-time downloaders aren't about to start
messing around with custom kernels. They will put in the CD, boot,
hang, and try another distro. The other will work and they will
think Mandrake is no good.

The system is a brand new ECS K7VMM mainboard, AMD Athlon XP 2100+
processor, 512MB PC2100 (DDR266) ram. All other peripherals (video,
network, audio, etc.) all are onboard.

I can install Mandrake 8.2 fine. The 9.0 release has this problem. The 9.1
RC1 has this problem.
