I downloaded ML 7.1 and tried it out. I had previously installed 7.0, using the ide2=xx,xx trick. I have an ABIT BH6, Creative TNT2U, Adaptec 2940UW and a Promise U66 (of course). /boot = hda1, /home = hda4, / = hde3, /usr = sda3 ML 7.1 seemed to install fine. It recognized hde, allowed me to set a mount point on it, it formated it, but then... The first (and last) time it tries to boot , I get: .... /sbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file. .... (more of the same) INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes /sbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file. .... (same) INIT: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes /sbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file. .... (same) INIT: Id "3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes /sbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file. .... Which was NOTHING. Then I pressed ctrl-alt-del and I got: INIT: switching to runlevel: 6 /etc/rc.d/rc: /etc/rc.d/rc: cannot execute binary file ... and it stuck completely I've tried both upgrade and clean install and I get the same. I don't know, maybe I should try the ide=xxx thing again, but, as I said, it does see the controller and the disk. Sorry to trouble you with this nonsence, but I got no replies from linux.mandrake usenet, nor from my local LUG (someone told me that for install to work ok, I need to have both primary and slave channels used, but it sounded weird and it also meant complete re-fdisk everything for win and linux alike).
