some bioses (if not most) are buggy.
quite a lot wrongly fill (when they bore to create them) acpi tables.
this is why "acpi=off" is needed for some machines.
kernel acpi implementation get more & more workaround for firmware
vendors bugs but "acpi=off" will still be needed on some boxes for
some time.

When I boot a system with acpi=on, the system hangs during the boot sequence on
"checking for new hardware". The computer is a Toshiba Satellite 5200-711.
If I skip Harddrake during the boot sequence, the system hangs after i log in.
