------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-20-09 23:01 ------- I should have remembered my own advice, as in: http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Splatt_Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=8186&forum=1&post_id=25770 Unfortunately I've uninstalled kernel-2.4.22.7mdk and can't find it for download anywhere, so I can't make any further tests with that specific version. Currently sticking to kernel 2.4.21-6mdk (acpi=off) because kernel-2.4.22-10mdk (acpi=off) results in very poor sound quality after some 10 or 20 seconds of live streaming (www.shoutcast.com)... OTOH it is not possible to play sound with alsa after booting with acpi enabled with any of these 2 kernels. That doesn't mean that alsamixer can't be started - it does start without any error messages - but the computer freezes when trying to play any sound through the PCM channel (like "aplay /usr/share/sound/startup.wav"). In summary... KERNEL 2.4.21-6mdk (acpi enabled) Computer freezes at KDE startup sound... KERNEL 2.4.22-10mdk (acpi enabled) Computer freezes at the time KDE startup sound is supposed to start playing... running "chkconfig --del sound" and rebooting allows KDE to load, suspend to disk, and resume... KERNEL 2.4.21-6mdk (acpi=off) [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ uname -a Linux localhost 2.4.21-6mdk #1 Tue Jul 22 14:34:34 EDT 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ dmesg | grep -i alsa [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [8233 ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8233 VIA 8233 at 0xe400, irq 5 KERNEL 2.4.22-10mdk (acpi=off) [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ dmesg | grep -i alsa [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [V8233 ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8233 VIA 8233 at 0xe400, irq 5 [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ In conclusion, this bug is probably invalid (the actual bug must be somewhere else, in some bad interaction between apic or acpi and the sound card driver in this hardware...). -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. ------- Reminder: ------- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: NEEDINFO creation_date: description: After updating to kernel 2.4.22.7mdk in order to test suspend to disk/resume (which worked fine for the first time at my machine with this kernel version), sound no longer works (neither PCM nor Audio CDs), and trying to start alsamixer results in the following error message: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory Additional info: [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ /sbin/lsmod | grep snd snd-pcm-oss 43428 0 (unused) snd-mixer-oss 14232 1 [snd-pcm-oss] snd-via82xx 14816 1 snd-pcm 78692 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via82xx] snd-timer 18276 0 [snd-pcm] snd-ac97-codec 44824 0 [snd-via82xx] snd-mpu401-uart 4608 0 [snd-via82xx] snd-rawmidi 17664 0 [snd-mpu401-uart] snd-seq-device 5672 0 [snd-rawmidi] snd 40836 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via82xx snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device] soundcore 6308 0 [snd] snd-page-alloc 8948 0 [snd-via82xx snd-pcm] [EMAIL PROTECTED] andreas]$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.
