------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 10:13 -------
I'm the one who put together the new contrib themes (Enterprise Linux, EL
Spotlight, and Radiant Star). The described behavior would also apply to the
standard Mandrake theme, but that one is out of my hands. :)

The bug with the login is a part of gdm itself, not the themes (see bug 5075).
And I'm not sure if the newline character was parsed before, but you could
open a bug upstream (at bugzilla.gnome.org) to try to get it fixed.

However, you are absolutely right about the boxes' behavior when too long a
string is entered. It has to do with how the entry area is sized and
positioned. I will try to fix that for the contrib package, and get back to
you here.

description:
1) long strings are not wrapped and the user name box grows to the length of the
string which puts the "Username" part off of the screen.
Also, I could not login. Since I could not see what was being entered I do not
really know what was happening.
2) the string substitution values %s, %r, %m, %h, \n, etc. are not handled at
all. Instead they are printed/displayed literally on the screen. GDM normally
displays the string with substitutions correctly.

example "Welcome string" to use:
Welcome to %s!\n\nMandrakeLinux Version %r\n with \nmultiple Intel %m CPUs\n and
\nLotsofMB SDRAM\n for \n%h.\n\n

This is related to the gdm bug that makes a user click twice to config GDM while
at the login screen. The new theme "Enterprise" prevents the ability to do that
- either click twice or enter the gdm configurator. User just gets beeps.

Because the user(as root) cannot edit the theme and login, the user is forced to
a console or to perform a reboot.

I have not tested all the new gdm-themes but since the setup is similar, expect
all of them to do the same.

Those are some very nice backgrounds! and, I like the setup too so please fix
this and the gdm 'click-twice' bug.
