It works for me.
What are your locales set to?
I changed mine to these:
LANG=zh_TW
LANGUAGE=zh_TW:zh
LC_ADDRESS=zh_TW
LC_COLLATE=zh_TW
LC_CTYPE=zh_TW
LC_IDENTIFICATION=zh_TW
LC_MEASUREMENT=zh_TW
LC_MESSAGES=zh_TW
LC_MONETARY=zh_TW
LC_NAME=zh_TW
LC_NUMERIC=zh_TW
LC_PAPER=zh_TW
LC_TELEPHONE=zh_TW
LC_TIME=zh_TW

Then I start Nautilus (nautilus-2.4.0-1mdk), and doubleclick an abiword file
(with English text, and Western fonts). If you made the Abiword file in zh_TW,
could you provide that abiwird file, and post it as attachement?

Further, what fonts do I need to have installed with this locale?
In my document I used Nimbus, but I installed fonts-ttf-big5-1.0-20mdk and
fonts-ttf-gb2312-1.0-20mdk, and changed the document to use "AR PL KaitiM GB"
fonts. It still loaded fine from Nautilus.

abiword freezes when loading a file in zh-TW with a dialog box saying that the
dictionary for zh-TW is not available. The program then locks.
