When did Gnome become the standard desktop?

Also how do I switch my desktop now that desktopcfg is missing.

I know I can switch with making a .xinitrc but that is not The Right Thing
To Do (CopyLeft Linus (i think))

And under session in gnome I can only find SawMill as a wm but there are
lots more installed??
