According to the Changelog from Alan Cox not, maybe its combined with
a driver issue ? (http://lwn.net/2000/0831/a/2.2.17pre20.php3).
Btw: There is now a 18pre2 out (though 2.2.17 is still not official)
which has tons of fixes. Maybe you'll try a vanilla 2.2.18pre2
kernel to see if this fixes your problems. I've read in messages
from the kernel mailing list about VM issues, but they don't seem
to be part of the changes around pre15.
