Oh dear, why do it the hard way?
Use rsync (man rsync). You can stop and resume it as much as you
like with no waste.
If you are only interested in an English (GB) install, use the rsync
script I have been publishing in the 'English-only download' thread
of this mailing list.
As published, this downloads the 7.2beta (in this mode only 971MB!)
and contrib (474MB) trees.
Just add a line:
--exclude=contrib/ \
line if you don't want the contrib tree.
