If you are interested in mp3 compression, look at
http://www.r3mix.net/

It seems that the best encoder is lame, it can even beat the famous
(and non-free) Fraunhofer encoder.

One problem: there is yet a package named lame (Linux Administration
Made Easy) in mdk....
