How about setting up MandrakeUpdate so that it tells you dependencies BEFORE you hit the install button, so you don't have to go through all the madness of reloading the package list etc...perhaps a link to the uninstalled depndencies could search the package list and automaticaaly select the dendency packages if they are there, and if not it could warn you......
