OK, why not try this ...
As root, in /etc/X11,
cp X X-3
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
then run /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and see how you go. If it doesn't
work, you can always do:
cd /etc/X11
cp X-3 X
