I did a quick search again (I did one when I ran into
the problem)- the difference is major in the way the
T-bird's L2 cache is implemented - refer to
http://www.trainwrecker.com/Reviews/Tbird/TBirdKA71.htm

.... Many were shocked and annoyed when AMD announced
that the "Athlon™ processor featuring
performance-enhancing on-chip L2 cache memory," AKA
Thunderbird, had compatibility issues with VIA's
KX-133 chipset. The Slot A form factor model would
only be officially supported by AMD's own 750
"Irongate" chipset and would be shipped exclusively to
OEM's and in limited quantities. VIA would have to
address the issue in their upcoming KT-133 chipset,
and users intending to upgrade have to "migrate" to
the Socket A form factor.
