Installation in two systems:
1) Main linux box: Pentium III 800, 128 Mb Ram, hda: 30 Gb (ATA 66) with two
windows partitions; hdb 20 Gb (ATA 100) with several linux partitions, one of
them running beta 3; the rest for MDK 8.0; Epson perfection 1200 USB scanner;
Epson Stylus Color 760 printer, two ethernet card, one for internet conexion
via Cable Modem SURFBoard and the other to conect my laptop using IP masking
to share my internet conexion. Sony CRX160 Cdrwriter (hdc) and Hitachi DVD
(hdd). Creative lab 128 PCI sound card; Voodoo3 3000 video-card; Avermedia TV
Capture 98 TV card. 2 USB ports.
2) Toshiba satellite 4090XCDT laptop, 64 Mb RAm, hda 4 Gb, 1/2 with windows
and 1/2 with linux, maestro sound card, two pcmcia slots, winmodem, 1 usb
port, Teach cdrom-driver.
Xawtv: I have the same problem I had mentioned before in various messages;
blue window, not sound; I had to substitute the version with MDK 8 with the
version of MDK 7.2 and now it runs fine. :-)
Cabletv: I can watch all the cable tv channels even the PPV (pay per view)
ones; on Sunday I can watch the footbal (soocer for american people) of the
Spanish first league. That runed also with MDK 7.2. :-)
Xcdroast (not in MDK 8, but present in betas 2 and 3) crashes when trying to
write a previously created image. Using command line mkisofs and cdrecord
this can be done. I had similar problems with Gtoaster an Gcombust; the last
write the cd, but was unreadable.
Epson perfection 1200 USB scanner detected, but the link wasn't created.
Anyway, is so much better than MDK 7.2 the USB support. :-). Now runing fine
with xsane or directly with gimp and sane plugin activated.
Cups seems work fine, by first of all it installated the printer in draft
quality and very small page margins. Fortunately it was easy to change all
these later. :-). My epson stylus color 760 runs fine. In my laptop also run
a HP LaserJet 4L.
Genius Netscroll mouse, was installed as generic wheel mouse and not problems.
Voodo3 3dfx: DRI (acceleration) runing. It seems there is a problem wit
xvideo; I can't run xine in full screen. The problem seems to be with the
kernel 2.4.3, I am trying to ask in the xine channel. ?:-O
>From beta 2 I had problems to run games in full screen, they crashes X. That
didn't happened with MDK 7.2. Unfortunately I don't know how to make pinguis
and clambomber run in a window, so I can't play these wonderfull games :-(
snif. Has anyone the same problem with a Voodoo3 3000 or similar under kernel
2.4.2 or 2.4.3
I did an expert install, but some packages weren't in the selection list, for
example Nedit.
Cable Modem: just giving the Host name it was installed at the first sight
:-) it was the first time, with MDK 7.2 and 8 betas 2 and 3 it was very
difficult, the installation didn't allow to select cable modem, and dhcp
files weren't installed. I had to do the installation of dhcp files by hand
and after that it wasn't difficult to activate my internet conexion. So final
8.0 is very well to do that; ||mm Vey good job MDK team! :-))
IP masquering, was made using MDK Control Center and my laptop runing windows
was conected to the second ethernet card and now I am capable of runing my
internet cable modem conexion from both, the main linux box and the laptop
runing windows98 (I have problems with my PCMCIA ethernet card and in linux
is not working :-( ). So it runs very well, :-))
DVD, xine and videolan runs generally fine dvd movies (xine a little beet
better). I just have to create a dvd-cdrom link according with the xine
howto. Not frames skiped neither lost (is the udf improved capabalities of
kernel 2.4). :-)).
Tetex: in my main linux box it was installed without problems, but in my
laptop there was an error with one of the files. I reached to install in the
laptop the last version from 7.2 withou problems ?:-O.
Konqueror: the plugins file wasn't installed. I did that by command line and
it runs fine.
In the laptop everything run fine except my PCMCIA fast ethernet Ovislink
10/100 Base-TX Ethernet PC CARD. Ovislink support said me that the module
isn't still avalaible. They said me the same 6 month ago. Is anyone using the
same ethernet card or similar?, I would like have more hd space in my laptop
for linux but if I can't run internet in linux I must have window also :-(.
Well, enought for the first time, isn't it?
I think the problems with front/ends to copy cd and cd-images could easily
solved by the experts (I have not idea, the command line could be a solution;
if you are interesting on, read my previous crashtesters message).
My PCMCIA fast ethernet card is a hardware problem; I will try to consult
specializated PCMCIA pages to search a solution, if it exists. If sombody of
these list (cooker and crashtesters) or of the Mandrake Team have any idea,
please, tell me; thanks :-)
See you soon
