I've got the same pb with nvidia drivers and cooker kernel.
But, amazingly, since I switch to xfce I've got no more pb. before I used to
use KDE or E.
I notice also that with a Vanilla kernel ( I test with 2.4.9 ), i've got no
pb at all (even if I use KDE or E ).
I've also try the builtin AGP drivers and agpgart. Now I use agpgart. Will
have to test if builtin agp driver works fine if I use xfce.

It's "normal" because of devfs. There are several threads concerning this
issue.
