[Cooker] (Beta1) freeze on Via 601BM mobo (and missing menu)

I've installed 8.1beta1 in a couple of places. It generally went well, 
but on one install with a Via 601BM motherboard the system froze after 
reading stage 2. Mind you, the same system refuses to boot from the 
CD-ROM (and BTW, did *everyone's* Beta1 have a missing-ish cdrom.img?).

On another install, the applications were all missing from the KDE menus 
and I kept getting complaints about the menu files, many of which seemed 
to have an excess of double-quotes in them.
