Many users seem to be bitten by this problem. This problem was reported
during pre-8.1 testing. And it is serious enough.

I had the same problem.
Mandrake will create a /dev/hd? if you've got a disk in the drive during
boot. You can them mount/umount at will.

Does anyone know how to refresh/rescan the ide devices after boot?
