Thanks for the tip Gueorgui.  I haven't tried Xnest before so I installed 
it from 8.1 distribution.  I'm finding it difficult to find any help apart 
from the man page, but it seems to be giving me the same sort of 
authorisation problems...

[00:18 peter@penguin:~]$ Xnest :1 && xterm -display :1
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm.real Xt error: Can't open display: :1

As for Win4Lin...
[00:19 peter@penguin:~]$ win -v
Win4Lin 3.0.6 (5.2.6d) 2001 August 16
XFree86 4.x

That works fine with the latest kernel from netraverse.com, as long as I 
use `win` rather than `fwin`.
