Try to make your own initrd without compressing the image, then you might be 
able to boot the thing (put it on the hard drive).

It sounds to me as it might be a flaky cdrom player, cpu or ram? Try to 
disable dma on the cdrom? reduce the clock settings for the cpu and/or ram?
