I have the optical cordless mouse; batteries last about two months.

I also have the cordless keyboard; nothing optical about it. Batteries last 
about a year.

 It doesn't seem to do a thing as far as I can tell. I have the scan code for 
the keys and could always use xmodmap to include them .A problem is that KDE 
2.x will no allow you to bind actions to keys (KDE 1.x would).
