Here is an interesting trick for others with this problem. After the kdm screen appears, go back and forth between "Ctrl + Alt + F1" and "Ctrl + Alt + F7" several times. Each time you will see more of the proper settings on your kdm login screen.
For me: 1st time, I get the blue background 2nd time, I get the login window framed, but still some blacked out areas 3rd or 4th time, it looks the way it should.
