I actually had just run mkinitrd because I installed
the new bootsplash. It also corrected my version error
on my recompiled 2.4.17-21mdk kernel (it had been
identifying itself at console logon as
2.4.17-20mdk.... which means either install kernel
made the wrong initrd originally or initrd was fixed.)

Nevertheless I am still having the problem below (and
I have had this problem since the beginning)
