Try this: [root@fiji ~]# update-alternatives --install /usr/sbin/sendmail sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix 10 [root@fiji ~]# update-alternatives --display sendmail sendmail - status is auto. link currently points to /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix - priority 10 Current `best' version is /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix. [root@fiji ~]# vdir /usr/sbin/sendmail lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Apr 25 13:29 /usr/sbin/sendmail -> /etc/alternatives/sendmail [root@fiji ~]# I don't think it would be a bad idea to include it in the post-install and post-uninstall scripts either.
