Hey,

I'm installing Mandrake 9 Beta 4 on an IBM Thinkpad 600E. On boot, alsa
doesn't report any errors and seems to load up fine (I get the correct
driver name in parentheses). I don't get any audio, however, and
gnome-volume-control says it can't access /dev/mixer. I checked this
out and found that /dev/mixer doesn't exist!

Harddrake2 reports the following:
Vendor: Cirrus Logic
Bus: PCI
Bus Identification: 1013:6001:1014:1010
Location on the bus: 0:6:0
Description: Cirrus CS4610/1 CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio
Module: cs46xx
Media class: MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

When I click on Run Config Tool and select cs46xx (the only option
available) I get the error:

Loading sound module (cs46xx)
/lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o.gz: Hint: insmod
errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid
IO or IRQ parameters.
...
modprobe: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod cs46xx failed

dmesg gives me the following:

AC'97 write problem, codec_index = 0, reg = 0x2, val = 0x8000
AC'97 read problem (ACCTL_DCV), reg = 0x2 (this error is repeated
several times)

cs46xx: create - never read card ready from AC'97
cs46xx: probably not a bug, try using the CS4232 driver
cs46xx: or turn off any automatic Power Management support in the BIOS.
This repeats a few times.. then:
cs46xx: cs46xx_probe()- cs_hardware_init() failed, retried 5 times.
cs46xx: probe()- no device allocated
cs46xx: Unable to detect valid cs46xx device

I checked the BIOS and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off any
automatic Power Management support. I don't know how to install the
CS4232 driver either.. I get a whole bunch of module dependencies that I
don't know how to satisfy.

Take care,

Onsi
