Okay, I had to start portmap by hand as it was also not running. Then fam started, but this has no influence on my problems with gnome.
Still there is no text and the panel doesn't start.

The only thing left in .xsession-errors is

gnome-panel: relocation error /usr/lib/libgen_util_applet-2.so: undefined symbol: wnck_tasklist_set_icon_loader
-----------
which appears several times.
