I did all three of your suggestions. I still cannot run xsane, gnome-alsamixer, or mozilla... unless I start them with GDK_USE_XFT="0". OTH, the fonts in KDE look better since the last fontconfig/freetype2 updates. Not perfect, but better. TTFN, Lonnie Borntreger
