           Product: drakxtools
         Component: diskdrake
Summary: Text version of DiskDrake = BIOS boot sector virus
                    warning
           Version: 9.1-4mdk
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hardware: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with Athalon 2600XP/333, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9700
Pro, 30GB(?) HDD, DVD CD-ROM, std floppy.

Partitions: hda1=100 MB DOS, hda5=14GB NTFS (Windows 2000), hda6=Linux Swap,
hda7=10GB Linux Native (Reiser FS)

The system had a fully installed and configured Windows 2000 Pro environment
with the DOS and NTFS partitions listed. Anti-virus software was installed and
up to date. The system was running fine - no issues.

I attempted to install ML 9.1 RC1. After having the graphic installers fail
(even with expert mode) I attempted a text mode install. The text mode install
was successful. As part of that install I used the text mode DiskDrake tool to
build the swap and linux partitions and write the new boot sector to hda.

When I rebooted the text lilo bootloader came up, and I selected linux; then
BIOS ant-vires software immediately reported a boot sector virus. I shut down
the system, unplugged it, did a power drain and then did a cold boot with a
clean Gentoo CD and used the the cfdisk utility to re-write my boot sector. It
wrote the MBR, but was unable to re-read it. After rebooting I again tried the
linux option at the lilo prompt, and the system booted normally (no warning).

I then shut down the system (unplug, power drain, cold boot) and tried the
windows option from the lilo prompt; the BIOS anti-virus again warned of a boot
sector virus. I atempted to restore the MBR and system files using the Windows
2000 utilities, but the system continually warned of a boot secote virus after
a full cold boot. After a complete (unplug, power drain, cold boot) reload of
the Windows 2000 OS things seem to be better (no warnings). Of course my ML
9.1 RC-1 partitions are gone now, too.

If you need more info (CD image or where I downloaded it from) please let me
know. Oh, the version info listed in the headers may be wrong, I used the
defaults. I was using the ML 9.1 RC-1 image available on the mirrors on
2/19/2003.

Mike
