OK, i left rpm --rebuilddb for over an hour, to no avail. Now back to idea of
"reboot helps" and "something may be blocking the DB". Here is what I see:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] DrakX-screenshots]# ps ax|grep rpm
22467 pts/1    S      0:00 /usr/lib/rpm/rpmq -q --all --qf [%{PROVIDENAME}
%|PROVIDEFLAGS?{%{PROVIDEFLAGS:depflags} %{PROVIDEVERSION}}:{}|\n] --queryformat
%{NAME}?

No idea where it comes from, but this does not look like something that would
take a long time to finish. On the other hand, it may have blocked the rpm
--rebulddb? I'll kill this process, and give rpm --rebuilddb another chance. If
that doesn't help, I'll try reboot.

Btw, this is what i get when installing a pack with urpmi now:

Preparing... ##################################################
   1:gqview ##################################################
error: db4 error(-30998) from db->close: DB_INCOMPLETE: Cache flush was unable
to complete

This does sound like a problem with rpm database corruption.

When I do "rpm -qa", the program would output several package names and then it
would get stucked.

I didn't build version with debugging information, though when I use "strace"
program to see what's happening I see that, when it gets stucked, it calls
select(0, NULL, NULL, NULL, {timeout}) and timeout keeps increasing up until it
reaches length of one second - then it keeps timing-out after one second for ever.

The only solution I found is system reboot :(
