------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-03-06 20:00 -------
This happens for me with my Game Theater XP on 9.1 RC2 too.

I managed to find a temporary workaround which is to use draksound to
choose the OSS cs46xx driver instead of the auto-detected ALSA snd-cs46xx
driver.

On making that change, the sound seems OK.

However, you get a warning that the cs46xx driver is black-listed and
snd-cs46xx is restored on reboot.

Additional info that might help someone fix this, if I use draksound to choose
the snd-cs46xx driver I get this error message (I have tried to make sure I
closed all applications that may be using the sound card):

[begin quote]
cs46xx: Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.11mdk/kernel/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz:
init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.11mdk/kernel/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod snd-cs46xx failed
insmod'ing module snd-cs46xx failed at /usr/lib/libDrakX/modules.pm line 61.
[end quote]

I find it strange that it says "no such device" when it seemed like the OSS driver
could see the device without any problem.

Output from lspci shows this:

[begin quote]
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 [IGD4-1P]

[end-quote]

And finally, here is the last bit of output from dmesg:

[begin-quote]

...and then it sounds terrible again.

description:
I just installed Mandrake 9.1 RC1 and sound is terrible with my Hercules Game
Theater XP. Volume is very low and when playing anything it crackles a lot and
there is a lot of hiss. I tried adjusting volume in mixer but I couldn't get
sound to normal. Sound worked just fine in Beta 3.
