I edited /etc/sysconfig/desktop to say gdm instead of kdm... did
telinit 3 then telinit 5 ... gdm took about 5 secs to start .... kdm
takes about 30 secs to start. What is even slower is a logout to "login
as a different user" This causes a wait so long that it's actually
faster to reboot than do it this way. During the waiting period I get
all of the keyboard lights flashing in a patteren like flash flash wait
wait flash wait wait, then repeat. No message to syslog,
.xsession-errors or messages. Only thing I get is the report to
messages that dm is starting and dm started successfully.

mdkkdm takes a very long time to come up. I have used KDE 3.1 on other
distrubtions with kdm (on the same system I am running 9.1RC2) and it is much
faster.
