With a new head of lettuce I remove the core by hitting it on the side of the countertop, then rip out the core. I then peel off a few lettuce leaves then put the lettuce in a new freezer bag before putting it in the fridge. Then I just wash the leaves as needed. With the core gone the lettuce stays fresher and brown spot free longer. I don't use a knife to remove the core as it turns the lettuce brown. HTH

Okay! The thing is that I have one of the frost-free fridges, and it would
be difficult to keep the paper towels sealed around the head of lettuce.

Let two! grins! grow! where one! grouch! was before!

I think your problem is with the plastic bag. Just wrap in paper towel
and check everything so if the towel needs changing if something spills on
it in the refrigerator you'll know it.
