As someone who was sighted a mere 12 years ago, and having spent significant
time in college also spent significant time in pizza places, I can't recall,
with two exceptions, any incidences of people eating pizza with utensils
other than the ones they grow at the ends of their arms. Those two
exceptions are the original Chicago style pizzas sold at Pizzeria Uno, where
some (but not all) patrons chose to eat them with a knife and fork, and at a
place called The Flying Tomato, where their stuffed pizza got the same
treatment by a minority of patrons. In both cases we're talking about thick
and substantial pizzas that resembled classic pies more than what we
generally think of as pizzas. So if your friends are getting into a snit
because they're expecting you to use a knife and fork to eat a pizza slice
then they're statistical outliers and in no way representative of the norm
or even those several standard deviations off the mainstream.
Fries and tater tots are similar.. Ever had someone put a knife or fork into
a fast food bag when you order a burger and fries? I haven't, and again,
I've eaten my share of fast food.
Remember too that your hands are your eyes. If they get too horsey about it
suggest that they close their eyes to eat and try it that way without using
their hands.
What I suspect is that you're associating either with people raised in
overly fastidious households or that they're under the mistaken impression
that others will think worse of them because they're with a blind person, so
they don't want any visible signs of your disability. In the former case you
might want to suggest that they watch Mystic Pizza or another movie about a
pizza parlor or some commercials for pizza chains, and in the second case
you might suggest a good therapist to them so they can stop pushing their
issues off on you. You're eating the way others eat in the majority. What's
next, using a fork to eat a burrito or taco? Eating Skittles with a spoon?
