Fill a tray in the sink and pour the water from the tray into a glass to get an idea of how much water to use.
Keep that glass somewhere so you can use it to fill the ice cube trays. Put the empty tray into the freezer and use that glass to fill the tray in the freezer. You will not over fill the tray that way.
