See comments below inline. For those that I am copying, but do not have context we are working on mapping the Open Manufacturing Ecosystem.
In mapping the ecosystem we are interested in understanding - What the various projects in this space are working on - What the goals of the projects are - What relationships they have with each other (common technologies, processes, markets, people etc.) - What possibilities there are for projects to work together - Etc. The following spreadsheet is what we plan to use to gather data: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiJ9wl9qbZEzdGRYY2YzRlhHemVMT3ZFd1otSHp0anc&hl=en The reason that we are mapping the ecosystem is - We are looking for candidate projects for the OpenKollab Ecosystem Pooled Fund <http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf/openkollab-pooled-fund> - We will be able to develop research and intelligence on how P2P networks are structured and how they function. This intelligence can then be used to develop visual maps and other sorts of 'views' of the space that can then be used to connect work being done in this area with work that is being done in other ecosystems. - We can help to build collaborative infrastructure and processes to help these networks function more effectively. Candidate projects will be those that bear some relation to each other and where we can identify synergy or mutual interdependence. Since you are all working on distributed manufacturing projects, there is clearly some relationship. I completely agree! It is the ecosystem view of the world, and the associated models, that we are developing that is unique. It is the right way to think about organizational interdependence in a world that is moving towards P2P, where organizations are networked, information flows across boundaries, organizational hierarchies are flattening etc. > There are indeed people that will fund > that, and that was already our stake in this as I've been saying all > along. > There may be investors that will fund the development of a robust view of ecosystems independent of whether the ecosystem is a financially sustainable social venture. The motivation for funding this will be the innovativeness of the model and the extent to which that sort of information can be an input into other sorts of decision making. Hence it would likely be of value to local governments, private organizations that want to extend their enterprise into the community etc. The *OpenKollab Pooled Fund <http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf/openkollab-pooled-fund>**i*s focusing on trying to identify financially sustainable ecosystems, but this is not the only sort of ecosystem that will be of interest. > > Of course, it's totally cool with me if you also want to seek funding > for that, too. > Will definitely try to fund anything that contributes to the larger picture! > > I am going to add the following fields to the spreadsheet, in order to > help understand the ecosystem better: > Yes, please add whatever fields represent exactly the information that you want to collect to develop the view you are envisioning.
