On my CentOS 5.5 64-bit machine:

$ ls -l /lib/libssl.so.*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 291236 Mar 26  2010 /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8e
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 Sep 27 17:49 /lib/libssl.so.6 -> libssl.so.0.9.8e

> I am also curious what coot feature actually requires the ssl library?

I think it's used by libcurl.
